Directed by Richard Donner, the 1980 drama Inside Moves featured a soundtrack jam-packed with yacht rock artists, including Ambrosia, which contributed the track “Outside.” Looking to take his mind off the debacle surrounding Superman II, Donner was looking to make a smaller film and signed on to Inside Moves. The movie stars David Morse as Roary, who tries to kill himself and ends up partially crippled. He finds community at the local dive bar, especially the bartender Jerry (John Savage). Jerry has a dream to play in the NBA, but he has a bad leg. After scrimmaging and barely losing to a Golden State Warriors player, Jerry discovers that there is a surgery to repair his leg, which he undergoes, and subsequently joins the Warriors. His newfound success causes him to ignore his old friends and drives a wedge between himself and Roary. The movie was well received by critics, and co-star Diana Scarwid was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars. The soundtrack featured yacht rock luminaries like Boz Scaggs, Pablo Cruise, and Leo Sayer, along with some non-yacht rock like The Spinners and Eagles. “Outside” was written by Ambrosia frontman David Pack and the king of yacht rock, Michael McDonald. The song was released as a single in 1981 but failed to chart on the Hot 100, peaking at #102. Ambrosia also contributed the song “Feels So Good to Win” to the 1980 movie Coast to Coast. Both songs are extremely rare and only appear on their respective movie’s soundtrack album and are not available on streaming platforms, except for YouTube, which has pretty much everything.
