Recorded to promote the 1986 version of The Fly, Bryan Ferry’s “Help Me” was reduced to a minor role in the David Cronenberg horror classic. Commissioned by the producers of the film. Ferry recorded “Help Me”, whose title references the original David Hedison/Vincent Price The Fly from 1958, and one of its most famous scenes. Cronenberg enjoyed the song but thought it was inappropriate for the tone he was trying to set, especially if it were the end-credits song as initially intended. The producers agreed after a screening, and the music is only heard in the background when Jeff Goldblum’s Seth Brundle goes to a bar and challenges one of the patrons to an arm wrestling match. The song did not appear on the movie’s soundtrack and only appeared later on the Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry The Ultimate Collection album. A music video was filmed, featuring Ferry in black and white, with clips from the movie throughout. Check it out below.
