Here’s all the movie and TV news you need to know from the past week, it’s the News Shotgun.

New Sharknado movie in development: SyFy’s schlocky disaster series Sharknado is coming back with a seventh entry. The Asylum is developing Sharknado Origins, a prequel to the film franchise that sees a young Finn, played by Ian Ziering in the series, meeting a young April, played by Tara Reid in the series, and coming up against the first-ever Sharknado. Anthony Ferrante, who directed all the previous Sharknado movies, is back to direct this new one.
Labubu movie in development: The wildly popular Chinese doll line of Labubu is being adapted into a movie by Sony. The film adaptation is in early development, and there’s no word on any talent attached or if the film will be a live-action or animated film (or maybe a hybrid of the two?). Labubus have exploded on the collector’s market, with some rare dolls going for six figures.
New Star Trek film in development: After several new TV shows, Star Trek is finally coming back to theaters with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley signed on to write, direct, and produce a new movie for Paramount. The movie will be a new take on the franchise, not connected to any previous shows or movies.
Kiefer Sutherland finalizing talks for Hour of Reckoning: Kiefer Sutherland is in advanced talks to star in a new revenge thriller Hour of Reckoning, from John Wick production company Thunder Road. Sutherland would play a retired lawman who returns to his hometown to investigate his brother’s mysterious death and finds the town under the control of a psychopathic crime kingpin. Vaughn Stein, who directed the Margot Robbie movie Terminal, is directing the film.
John Woo and Nicolas Cage reuniting for new film: Almost 30 years after Face/Off, Nicolas Cage is reuniting with director John Woo for a new film. The movie is Gambino and is a biopic about notorious NYC kingpin Carlo Gambino. Cage is playing Gambino, “a butcher’s son from Sicily, who rules New York’s underworld with quiet authority. But when his death sends shockwaves through the city, Pulitzer-winning journalist Jimmy Breslin follows the trail he left behind to uncover the man beneath the legend. Through the voices of those who loved him and those who feared him, Breslin peels back the composure that masked Gambino’s ruthlessness, revealing how this outsider rose to redefine power, loyalty and the American dream.”
Poker Face canceled at Peacock: Peacock has canceled Poker Face after two seasons, but a new Poker Face may rise from the ashes. Rian Johnson and star/producer Natasha Lyonne are shopping a new version of the series to other distributors with Peter Dinklage in the lead role of Charlie Cale. The plan is to get a two-season order and potentially to have the lead actor change every two seasons.
Dora and Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles canceled: Paramount has canceled Dora and Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as part of the company’s restructuring following its purchase by Skydance. Tales of the TMNT will debut its second and final season on Paramount+ in December and will air on Nickelodeon in 2026. Dora has a fourth season that will debut on Paramount+ and then air on Nick Jr. Dora also has a fifth season in production, but it’s unclear if it will air. Paramount is shopping out both shows to license to other streamers; for example, several Nickelodeon series are currently available on Netflix.
Gabriel Basso making directorial debut with Iconoclast: The Night Agent star Gabriel Basso is making his directorial debut with the thriller Iconoclast. Basso will also star alongside Courtney Eaton, Noah Centineo, and Rain Spencer and the movie “follows a reclusive young man whose dangerous obsession with a live-streaming influencer increasingly erodes his grip on reality. ” The film is currently in production.
Death Stranding anime series coming to Disney+: Game creator Hideo Kojima is bringing the Death Stranding universe to Disney+ with a new anime series, Death Stranding Isolation. Takayuki Sano, of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, will direct the series, with 2D, hand-drawn animation coming from E&H Productions. The show will follow game protagonist Sam Bridger (played by Norman Reedus in the game series) on an original adventure in the game’s universe. There is also a live-action film in development from A24, as well as an anime film on the way.
Shōgun sets new and returning cast for Season 2: FX has announced the new and returning cast for the upcoming second season of Shōgun. Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis return to star and Asami Mizukawa, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Takaaki Enoki and Jun Kunimura will join the cast as new characters. Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno, and Yuka Kouri return from the first season. The new season will be set 10 years after the events of season 1 and spin off into a new, original story. The first season was based on James Clavell’s massively popular novel, which had previously spawned a miniseries in the 1980s.
Colin Farrell starring in thriller Ordained: Colin Farrell has signed on to star in the new action thriller Ordained. Based on an upcoming comic from Bad Idea, Farrell plays a priest who performs last rites on a dying mob boss. When the boss survives, he sends an army of gangsters, hit men, and corrupt cops after the priest to keep his confession a secret. Luckily, the priest has a violent past that he reawakens to help him survive, but he refuses to kill. The Russo Brothers will produce the film, and John Wick’s Derek Kolstad wrote the script.
Jason Momoa starring in Nomad on Apple TV: Jason Momoa is sticking close to Apple TV after See and Chief of War, with a new series in development, Nomad. Teaming up with Kurt Sutter and Chris Collins, Momoa will star in the series, set in the world of New Zealand motorcycle gangs. Sutter co-created Sons of Anarchy, and Collins also worked on that series.
Alien: Earth renewed for a second season: Alien: Earth will continue on FX with a second season on the way. Creator Noah Hawley has signed an overall deal with Disney and FX, valued in the nine figures. Production on the new season is set to begin next year in London; Season 1 was filmed in Thailand.
Sabrina Carpenter starring in musical Alice in Wonderland for Universal: Universal is looking to keep their musical money flowing after Wicked: For Good wraps up that series with an Alice in Wonderland-inspired musical movie. Pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter has signed on to star in her first major starring film role. Lorene Scafaria is writing and directing the film.
Dune: Prophecy adds new cast members: With production on Season 2 beginning this past week, Dune: Prophecy revealed three new cast members joining the cast. Indira Varma, Ashley Walters, and Tom Hollander will join the returning cast, which includes Emily Watson, Travis Fimmel, Mark Strong, and Olivia Coleman. The series is set 10,000 years before Dune and follows the rise to power of the Bene Gesserit, who influence the direction of the universe from the shadows.
Bad Monkey Season 2 adds more cast members: Bad Monkey Season 2 has added three more cast members to its ensemble with Brent Morin, Peter Billingsley, and June Diane Raphael. Vince Vaughn returns to star as disgraced Miami detective Andrew Yancy, and Natalie Martinez, Charlotte Lawrence, John Ortiz, John Malkovich, Yvonne Strahovski, Zavior Phillips, and Nate Jackson were previously announced as returning and new cast members. The new season is telling an original story in contrast to season 1, which was based on the Carl Hiaasen novel of the same name.
Betty Boop horror movie in development: In the new tradition of turning public domain characters into horror monsters, Betty Boop will terrorize audiences in a new horror movie. In Boop, a team of horror podcasters investigates an abandoned theater and finds itself trying to survive the murderous rampage of the theater’s former starlet. Katisha Shaw, Spencer Breslin, Eva Hamilton, Colton Tran, and Devanny Pinn star in the film.
View-Master movie finds a screenwriter: The film inspired by the classic toy View-Master has found its screenwriter, with Phil Johnston. Phil Johnston co-directed and co-wrote Wreck-It Ralph and Ralph Breaks the Internet. There’s no word on what the plot of this View-Master will be but Mattel Studios is aiming for it to be a four quadrant film.
Idris Elba back for new Luther movie: Idris Elba is back for another Luther movie on Netflix, the sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun. The latest movie finds John Luther secretly returning to action when a new series of brutal murders hits London. Dermot Crowley and Ruth Wilson will reprise their roles from the series, and Jamie Payne, who directed episodes of the series as well as The Fallen Sun, will direct this new film.
DC Crime series in development for HBO Max: The new DC universe is expanding with a new series for HBO Max, DC Crime. Hosted by Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen, the show will be presented in a true-crime documentary format, with each season focusing on a DC supervillain. The first season will focus on Flash nemesis Gorilla Grodd. Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the creators of American Vandal, are showrunning the new series.
V for Vendetta TV series in development: HBO is developing a TV series adaptation of V for Vendetta. Pete Jackson will write the series, and James Gunn and Peter Safran will serve as executive producers. The comic series by Alan Moore and David Lloyd was previously adapted into a film in 2005, starring Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman.
