Riding high off of Starsky & Hutch, actor David Soul released a worldwide smash hit song, “Don’t Give Up On Us”. Soul had aspirations to be a singer early in his career before pivoting to acting but with the success of Starsky & Hutch, he was able to return to it and released the album David Soul in 1976, which “Don’t Give Up on Us” appeared on in later editions. The song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1977, topped the Adult Contemporary charts, and spent four weeks at #1 on the UK charts. The song was Soul’s only hit in the US, but he continued to have success in the UK and released four more albums. The song gained renewed interest when the movie Starsky & Hutch hit theaters in 2004, with Owen Wilson performing it, somewhat ironically, as Hutch. Soul heard Wilson’s version and was allegedly pretty embarrassed, and he recorded a new version in 2004. You can check out the music video of the song from 1976 below.
