Animorphs TV series in development: A favorite of 90s kids, the Animorphs book series is getting adapted into a Disney+ series. Ryan Coogler is among the executive producers, and Scholastic is co-producing the series, as it published the original book series. The show’s logline is: “follows a group of teenagers who uncover a hidden threat lurking beneath their everyday lives, all while juggling relationships, curfews, and the chaos of High School.” A TV series based on the books aired on Nickelodeon from 1998 to 2000.
Dungeon Crawler Carl series coming to Peacock: Based on the massively popular book series, a Dungeon Crawler Carl series is coming to Peacock. Seth McFarlane’s Fuzzy Door Studios is producing the series, which finds Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s talking show cat battling for their survival on an alien reality show after an invasion wipes out most of humanity. The book series by Matt Dinniman has seven books, with an eighth on the way this May.
Brian Cox joins Dexter: Resurrection. For the second season of Dexter: Resurrection, Brian Cox will be playing Dom Framt, aka The New York Ripper, a character previously mentioned in Season 1 of the sequel series. He was an active serial killer who continued to taunt the survivors of his killing spree. Cox has experience playing serial killers, having portrayed Hannibal Lecter in Michael Mann’s 1986 film Manhunter.
Weapons prequel finds screenwriters: The prequel to the Oscar-winning Weapons has found its screenwriters, with director Zach Cregger co-writing the movie with Zach Shields, who has been writing for the Monsterverse. The prequel is focused on Aunt Gladys (Amy Madigan) before she terrorized the residents of Maybrook.
Wagner Moura joins A24’s Flesh of the Gods: Fresh off his Oscar nomination, Wagner Moura is joining Kristen Stewart to co-star in A24’s Flesh of the Gods. A vampire thriller, the movie is set in the 80s as a couple, played by Moura and Stewart, are seduced into the world of Nameless and her cabal. Moura replaces Oscar Isaac, who has to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts. Mandy director Panos Cosmatos is directing the movie.
Scream 8 finds screenwriters: Despite a critical drubbing, another Scream movie is on the way, following Scream 7, which became the highest-grossing entry in the franchise. Scream 8 has found screenwriters in the Zuckerman Sisters, Nora and Lilla, who most recently served as showrunners on Poker Face and previously worked on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe, and Prodigal Son. They also wrote the script for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot with Chloe Zhao, which didn’t go forward.
Stellan Skarsgard joins Apple TV thriller series: After working with Elle Fanning on the Oscar-nominated Sentimental Value, Stellan Skarsgard will join Dakota Fanning for an upcoming, untitled Apple TV thriller series. The series is being showrun by Alex Cary, who previously worked on Homeland, Taken, and Legends. The show follows “an undercover Treasury agent in a multibillion-dollar international conglomerate, with world-changing political and criminal tentacles, who becomes conflicted between her mission and a belief that her principal target, the heir apparent to all that corrupt power, is at his core a good man and worthy of her love.” Skarsgard is playing Brant, the head of the conglomerate.
Maul – Shadow Lord renewed for Season 2: Ahead of its premiere on April 6th, Maul – Shadow Lord will return for a second season. Dave Filoni confirmed the news that a second season is in production at Lucasfilm. The series finds Maul (Sam Witwer) trying to rebuild his criminal empire and get revenge on those who betrayed him.
