The Super Mario Galaxy Movie remained at the top of the box office for another big weekend, as blockbuster competition remains light.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie took in another $68 million over the weekend, bringing it to $307.2 million domestically. Worldwide, it now has $628.5 million. For a movie this massive, it actually had a fairly low drop from its opening weekend to this weekend at 48%. That seems to indicate that, despite critical reviews and some vocal negativity online, there are still tons of people heading out to see it. It is quite a bit down from the first movie’s second weekend, which was $92.3 million and a domestic total of $353.1 million. Galaxy is still massive, and it’s the biggest movie worldwide so far this year.
Project Hail Mary dropped only 24% in its fourth weekend, earning another $24.1 million and bringing it to $256.2 million domestically and $510.2 million worldwide.
The Drama dropped 39% from last weekend’s opening, making another $8.7 million for a domestic total of $30.8 million. It’s slightly ahead of where Challengers was at the same point, so if it keeps this pace, it should be able to make $50 million+ domestically.
You, Me & Tuscany and Hoppers rounded out the top 5.  You, Me & Tuscany was the only major wide release this past weekend and opened to $7.7 million, slightly above Anyone But You, which opened to $6 million.  That movie eventually made over $218 million, but it also opened before Christmas in 2023 and was able to leg out during the relatively slow January box office. You, Me & Tuscany got an A- CinemaScore, so word of mouth seems likely to be strong; we’ll need to see how much it drops this coming weekend.
Further down the list, Faces of Death opened in seventh place with $1.6 million in 1,600 theaters, averaging around $1,000 per theater for the weekend. The CinemaScore was a not-great C grade, so word of mouth probably won’t be strong, and it seems like there wasn’t enough nostalgia or interest in a remake of the 1978 cult horror movie. Exit 8 opened in eighth place with $1.4 million in 495 theaters. The movie got strong reviews and has been successful worldwide before this domestic release, especially in Japan. It has over $6.5 milion worldwide so far.
