Summer blockbuster season kicked off this past weekend with The Devil Wears Prada 2, which unseated Michael to take the top spot at the box office.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened to $77 million domestically and $233.9 million worldwide. It’s a huge jump up from the first film, which opened to $27.5 million back in 2006. Even adjusted for inflation, that’s just over $45 million, which shows how big the original movie has gotten over the last 20 years and how much demand there was for a sequel. It’s definitely on the higher end of long-delayed sequels, as other movies like Zoolander 2 and Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps had similar gaps between the original film and sequel and opened much lower. The movie got an A- CinemaScore, so audiences apparently enjoyed what they saw.
Michael dropped 44% from last weekend’s massive opening, taking in another $54.4 million. It now has $184.2 million domestically and $430.2 million worldwide. It’s now the third-highest-grossing film domestically in 2026 and the fourth-biggest movie worldwide.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie dropped to third with another $12.1 million. It now has $402.6 million domestically and $897.2 million worldwide, and is currently the highest-grossing film of 2026.
Project Hail Mary and Hokum rounded out the top 5. Hokum opened with $6.4 million domestically, which is on the higher end for Neon openings, just below Together. Compared to A24, their bigger movies like Hereditary and Talk to Me opened higher, but Hokum opened higher than films like X and It Comes at Night. Hokum also had a very solid B CinemaScore, which is high for a horror film, so it may have good word-of-mouth that could make it a slow-burn hit.
The new Animal Farm opened outside the top 5, in sixth place, with $3.3 million. It got a C- CinemaScore, which is not what you want from a film aimed at families, with bigger competition coming up in the next month. The other new releases of the weekend, Deep Water and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea , debuted in eighth and ninth place, respectively.
