The Craft came out 30 years ago this past weekend, and it’s continued to influence all kinds of media, including the 2015 music video for “Black Magic” by British girl group Little Mix. Formed on The X Factor in the show’s eighth season, they are considered the show’s most successful winning act and kicked off a girl-group renaissance in the UK. “Black Magic” came off the group’s third album, Get Weird, as the lead single. It was a massive hit in the UK, hitting #1 and staying on top for three weeks. It also became the group’s highest charting single in the US, reaching #67 on the Billboard Hot 100. While the song’s actual “black magic” is about having confidence, the music video takes it literally: the girls, who start out as awkward nerds, find a spellbook in their school library and use it to gain magical powers. They use their new abilities to give themselves makeovers and to manipulate other students at school. Along with The Craft, there are also elements of Charmed and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
